New Delhi: Pressing India to speed up implementation of the Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement, US Senator John Kerry said if negotiations aren't wound up soon, New Delhi will not get a "similar" deal.
Senator Kerry, in Delhi to meet the Prime Minister said the deal, complete with the safeguards agreement from the IAEA and the Nuclear Suppliers Group, must reach the US Congress by May.
Congress should approve the deal latest by July before it goes into recess. Otherwise the deal could fall through.
Three steps are required to operationalise the deal.
India needs to conclude a safeguards agreement with the IAEA, get approvals from the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and get a second backing from the US Congress.
The deal has been criticised by many outside India, including by some members of the US Congress, who say the deal unfairly rewards India and undercuts a US-led campaign to curtail the nuclear ambitions of nations like Iran.
