Mumbai: Celebrating the 160th birth anniversary of renowned painter Raja Ravi Varma, National Award-winning filmmaker Ketan Mehta released the first look of his movie Rang Rasiya based on the life of the artist, amidst much fanfare.
Based on the life and times of renowned painter Raja Ravi Varma, the film is an adaptation of Marathi writer Ranjit Desai's novel, Raja Ravi Varma.
"I was very impressed with Ravi Varma's paintings when I was a Film Institute student. I realised he is the father of modern art, that he's influenced Indian art and Indian cinema like nobody else has," Mehta said.
Starring Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen in the lead, the film also introduces two fresh faces – Ferena Wazier and Tripta Parahar.
“I am playing a Kerala princess and Randeep Hooda's wife, or you can say Raja Ravi Varma's wife, in this,” said Tripta.
The film will be released in Hindi and English titled Rang Rasiya.
“And yeah, there's Colours of Passion,” interpolated Nandana Sen, referring to the film’s sub-title.
The cast and crew feel they can identify with the painter as his life is relevant today, as well.
As actor Randeep Hooda put it, “My own complexities and my own complexes and striving to better myself; so somewhere there I connected to Ravi Varma.”
“He also faced the kind of problems that we face today. He was charged with obscenity in spite of being one of the greatest Indian painters of his time,” added Ketan Mehta.
There may already be a controversy brewing over this historical offering but no one is concerned much with that.
“Controversy is my middle name, as they say. It chases me wherever I go," said Ketan Mehta, with a laugh.
"Well, controversy's good. I think it gives some mileage to the movie," opined Hooda.
