New Delhi: It is her third kidney transplant, a very rare surgery. Kenya’s Lorna Irungu, 35, had four kidneys. The extra two kidneys were removed in the last operation. The doctors at Fortis had to now replace one of the failed kidneys with a new one and they did it successfully.
“It requires great medical expertise to undertake such a complicated task. Fortunately we have been successful,” says a nephrology expert.
“I am happy after the third transplant, feeling much better than when I went through the first transplant,” say Lorna.
Lorna a communications manager got her first transplant in 1998 in Nairobi and the second one three years later in Ahmedabad. Both were unsuccessful. But she was impressed with the skill of the Indian doctors and decided to come here again for the third transplant.
“The medicines and secondly the expertise of the doctors and the skills - all three are a winner,” adds Lorna.
Lorna is now recovering and has not complained of any medical problems so far. Doctor's say she would be able to fly back home in a few months.
After the Mumbai terror attacks there were fears that medical tourism in India would take a hit but Lorna's case shows that Indian doctors have the expertise and skill which will continue to attract patients from across the world.
