Mumbai: Adeeb Sheikh, one of the four Indian labourers kidnapped by extremists in Sudan last month, managed a great escape to return safely to India.
Recalling the nightmare, 22-year-old Sheikh - an employee of Oil and Natural Gas Commission – says he had almost given up hope. "I had given up hope. I never thought I'll never make it back,” he says.
Sheikh employee was kidnapped in the second week of May but escaped captivity when the militants who took him and others hostage were engaged in a gun battle with the local army.
But his ordeal did not end there. "I ran for days through the jungle without either food or water before reaching the local embassy,” he says.
Now that the trying times are over, Sheikh’s family is relieved. "I'm not going to let him go back now,” says his father Qamar Ahmed.
But while Sheikh is back home safe, the fate of his three other colleagues still hangs in the balance. The Sudanese extremists have demanded a ransom of $ 0.1 mn for their release.
