Kidney racket update: Amit owns hospital in Nepal

Brijesh Pandey, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: In the latest revelation on the kidney scam, Upendra, the doctor arrested for being involved in the multi-crore racket, has now reportedly said that the alleged kingpin Amit owned a hospital in Kathmandu.

Moradabad Police say Upendra has revealed that Amit was to perform kidney transplants on five Turkish nationals in Kathmandu on January 26.

Upendra had earlier revealed that three Turkish nationals had died during transplant operations.

The Gurgaon police has confirmed that the Turkish Embassy had asked the Government to investigate the deaths in February 2006, but nothing had came of it.

“Turkish embassy had requested the Indian government to order a probe into this episode,” said Gurgaon police Commissioner, Mahindra Lall.

The Delhi police, meanwhile, has reacted sharply to the Gurgaon police's suggestion that Upendra and his driver Harpal had been arrested earlier this year, and freed after Upendra paid a hefty bribe and has insisted that Upendra had never been arrested. But the Gurgaon police stand by their allegations.

“Harpal, driver of Upendra, has told us about this deal with Delhi police,” revealed Mahindra Lall. “We will shed more light on it once we get the custody of Upendra.”

The focus of investigation has now shifted to Nepal, where several teams of the Moradabad police have been dispatched to unearth more facts about the biggest kidney racket in Indian history.
