New Delhi: No handcuffs, no arrests and no lock-ups on being apprehended law to deal with juvenile delinquents has changed completely in the ground rules laid through this notification by the central government.
It has laid a rule that no child in conflict with the law will be put behind bars.
The JJ Act or the Juvenile Justice Act was amended in November last year by Parliament. The government has now through the Gazette notified these amendments and simultaneously changed some rules on Juvenile delinquents.
The new rules state that anyone below the age of 18 years should be apprehended only in cases that entail punishment of more than seven years for adults.
The police should immediately hand over the child caught on the wrong side of the law to the nearest Child Welfare Officer. The new rules also try to reduce pending of the cases in Juvenile Boards.
"We have decided to set up JJ boards and have child protection officer in each district,” says Minister for Women and Child Development, Renuka Choudhary.
The new JJ Act also makes adoption easier giving rights to parents irrespective of caste and religion to adopt children. This provision in the law only dealt with the Hindus earlier.
