Killing Family: Horror in the name of honour

New Delhi: Honour killings are brutal and barbaric. Just a few kilometres away from the National Capital, at least half a dozen honour killings have been reported. It is generally cases of daughters being murdered in cold blood, mostly for loving or marrying outside of her caste.

Roshni Devi strangled her six-month pregnant daughter Sunita and her lover Jasbeer in cold blood and then chillingly confessed to the murder, saying that she was happy with what she had done and that no one had forced her to do it.

Sunita and Jasbeer's fault - to fall in love with each other despite being from the same village, a sin in Jat territory where people from the same village are considered siblings.

However, people from such villages agree with Roshni Devi's act, some going as far as saying: "These things are a custom, we have to obey. If you dont stick to our customs, what's the difference between us and wild animals then?"

It's horror in the name of honour where families kill their loved ones and caste-based panchayats continue to support such brutal murders.

Newly-married couple Balkar Singh and Ravindar Pal Kaur were shot dead at their village in Taran Taran by members of the girl's family. Balkar was gunned down in the market and Ravindar was killed inside their house.

SSP Tarn Taran, H S Chahal says, "Her father, brother and some more relatives, armed with firearms killed the newly-wed couple."

Nineteen-year-old Poonam was thrown into a canal near Haryana's border with Rajasthan and left to die by her relatives all because she, a Jat girl, married a Dalit boy. Poonam lived to tell the tale, but her belief in the institution of family died an instant death.

"I want to live on my own. I have no faith in anyone now," says she.

And then there are even cases where people have given their own lives for honour.

It was the American dream that ended in a body bag for Karthik Rajaram's family who all lived in the US. Rajaram calmly killed his three sons, wife and mother-in-law after he went bankrupt post the recession. He then committed suicide. In his suicide note Kartik said: "It was the honourable thing to do."

Extremities, be it rage, depression or simply helplessness drive people over the edge and all that remains are fragments of a life that could have been.
