Kin fume over CBI's Nithari ruling

New Delhi: The CBI has given Monidher Singh Pandher - the prime accused in the Nithari killings - a virtual clean chit. However, his man servant Surendra Koli, has been chargesheeted for murder.

However the people of Nithari are not rejoicing. Instead they are enraged and the families of the victims say they will approach the President to express their reservations on the CBI's findings.

Says a resident of Nithari, Lakshmi, "Whenever I see the house, it's like someone's shot a bullet in my stomach. The house is still standing, our enemy is still intact."

Lakshmi is heartbroken at the CBI's decision not to charge Moninder with murder. The clean chit has come as a blow to her faith in the system.

When her eight-year old daughter Rachna went missing a year ago, Lakshmi's husband Pappu Lal gave up his job to look for her, but he says his hopes are now shattered.

"We were trying so hard to forget the incident, but the CBI has just raked open the wounds," says Pappu Lal.

Filing its first chargesheet, the CBI slapped lesser charges on Pandher, like indulging in prostitution, bribing the police and destruction of evidence. But the villagers in Nithari feel the logic is askew.

Says a washerwoman in Nithari, Sunita, "The CBI is lying. Moninder was always at home. He used to give his clothes for ironing everyday."

The CBI probe concluded that Pandher wasn't in his house when Koli committed the 16 murders, and he was unaware of the killings. But Sunita and her husband Jhabbu Lal, who have been ironing clothes in front of Pandher's house for several years don't buy that.

"We will not leave them. We will take revenge," says Jhabbu Lal.

Villagers say there are many loopholes the CBI has conveniently overlooked. They allege that the CBI never questioned any of the families and has bowed down to the might of money.

"We are completely broken now. We don't have any other option but to commit suicide," says Pappu Lal.
