But now, 20-year-old Deivikarajan is surrounded by friends assuring him that he can be treated for kidney failure.
What he doesn’t know is that his parents, uncle, aunt and little brother had given up hope of his survival and had poisoned themselves on Tuesday night in a room right next to his.
"He doesn't know that they're gone yet. We're going on with treatment without telling him. If he finds out, we're afraid his condition will get worse," says Deivikarajan’s friend and nurse, Ravi.
Deivikarajan's youngest brother was 11 years old when he had died of similar kidney ailment four years ago.
Relatives say that the parents couldn't bear the thought of witnessing the death of yet another son. According to the police, the family consumed rat poison.
"I knew they had given up hope. I begged that they try better treatment. I don't know why they were convinced that he was going to die soon," says his grandmother, Saroja.
Deivikarajan lies in this room, unaware that his family is now no more. He's been told they're at the church, praying but already, he's asking questions.
The main concern of the family now is how they're going to break the news to Deivikarajan and whether his condition is as bad as it seems. For now, what could be an answer to some questions is a re-diagnosis.
