Kochi celebrates Jewish wedding after 21 yrs

Kochi: It was a wedding at the Kochi Synagogue that had plenty to cheer about.

The first Jewish wedding after 21 years took place in Kochi on Sunday. Scores of Jews had gathered and they finally had something to celebrate after the Nariman House killings in Mumbai.

The merry making was in typical Jewish style with the bride and the groom drinking wine and then the groom traditionally breaking the wine glass, but not before exchanging the rings, which were soaked in wine.

For the small Jewish community in Kochi, it was a very special occasion but under the watchful eyes of security personnel.

“We wanted to make sure that nothing goes wrong. So after what happened in Mumbai we decided to give full protection during the wedding. All arrangements were made in advace,” Circle Inspector at Fort Kochi, Lalji, said.

So as Josephai from Kochi and Susan from Isreal tied the knot the same year the rabbi and his wife fell to the shots of terrorists in Mumbai, perhaps the small community in God's Own Country will have their faith reinstated that this nation which they adopted centuries ago is still a better place to live in.
