Kolhapur: Stampede during rath yatra, three dead

Kolhapur: At least three people were killed and three others injured during a stampede at a religious procession in Chandgarh in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra. The stampede took place on Wednesday during the rath yatra at the Lakshmi Devi temple.

The victims came under the rath after its wheel came undone and were crushed to death. The crowd walking behind the rath surged ahead leading to the stampede.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital where one of them is reported to be in a serious condition.

The stampede took place during the Lakshmi rath yatra. The victims were crushed under the wheels of the rath.

Officials have stopped that rath yatra and people have moved away from the accident spot. The yatra would resume after the situation is brought under control.

The Lakshmi rath yatra takes place once in 10 years in Chandgarh and officials say that a large number of devotees gather for the yatra.
