Kolkata: Animul Islam was killed during the violence which broke in Rajarhat between two football playing teams in a local tournament. His mother mourning the death of her son.
But a day after the ugly attacks, the quality of refereeing in the match doesn't appear to be mourning. A mob went on the rampage at Kolkata's popular weekend resort the Vedic Village. Police say, Gaffar Ali Mullah who led the mob was trying to intimidate the local people for not selling their land to the resort.
It's a charge reiterated by the State Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen. "It is not merely an allegation. Even we feel that realtors like Vedic Village maybe engaging local land mafia to forcefully acquire land from villagers for expansion of their projects," said Sen.
The police said Gaffar was known to help developers in forceful land acquisitions in the area. Since the local resort Vedic Village has also been made on over 300 acres of land acquired from local residents.
On Monday police recovered 22 crude bombs and six guns from inside the Vedic village premises. Police said they were investigating reports of Gaffar making unsuccessful attempts to coax more people to sell their land and whether Sunday's violence was a planned effort to frighten the locals.
"He has hundreds of goons and his job is to frighten land owners and extract land at low cost," said a resident Sudhir Mondal.
The police said they have arrested 12 people for the violence, even though prime suspect Mullah is still absconding.
