Kolkata: In an answer to the Congress's street protests, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's party workers took to the streets in massive numbers in Kolkata on Monday.

Mamata stayed away, but her top leadership was there. The rift in the Congress-TMC alliance sparked off by the Trinamool's charge that the Congress was associating with the Left.

Trinamool workers took to the streets in huge numbers in a tit for tat response to the Congress's street protests against the Mamata government over the past few weeks.

Trinamool leader Subrata Mukherjee said, "Mamata Banerjee is not running India. She will in future and preparations are on. But these people think that Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee have quit in the face of Anna's assault and Mamata has already taken over."

Aimed at embarrassing the Congress, on the dias were recent entrants in the Trinamool, those who had jumped the ship from the Congress. Accusing the Congress of hobnobbing with the Left again, the Trinamool Congress made it clear that the Congress was free to leave.

Trinamool leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay said, "If we find them rubbing shoulders with the CPI(M) in this manner, then we have to say that the doors are open and you may leave. That is the message of the moment."

The Congress, meanwhile, has not been making any efforts to reach out either.

WBPCC President Pradip Bhattacharya said, "We do not bother, neither do we care to (sic) these things. We are very much prepared to face the consequences and give the reply for what they have been saying."

The Trinamool Congress retort has made one thing clear, that its alliance with the Congress will run into rough weather in the upcoming Panchayat and Municipal polls in the state. As for the central coalition, Mamata Banerjee has put the ball back in the court of the the Congress high command to salvage this relationship, which has hit an-all time low.
