Kolkata: Social networking website Orkut has been absolved of being the plotting ground for Mumbai teenager Adnan Patrawalla's murder.
But that hasn't stopped several schools in Kolkata from restricting their students from using the website. School authorities say students waste their time by visiting such uncensored websites.
“These sites are actually dangerous for children since there are stuffs which are nasty, ugly and if they don't have a maturity level it can really affect them. If these bad ideas get into children's mind at a growing age, it will be really difficult for them to come out of it,” says Principal Loreto House, Kolkata, Sister Cerene.
The schools have already informed parents that they think sites like Orkut could be bad for the children. However, some parents agree with the teachers.
“I do not trust what I cannot see because there are people I do no know across the net but if she is above 16, there's not much we can do,” says a parent, Nandita Biyan
And the students fully agree.
“There are some communities which are anti-Indian which can influence the mind, but it also depends on the individual,” says a student, Sohini Chattapadhay.
While the schools play net nanny, Orkut still remains easily accessible to students from homes and cybercafes.
So clearly, this is one network that will not be easy to scrap.
