New Delhi: A group of angry residents of Topsia near Parama Island on the eastern fringes of Kolkata set fire to four fire engines because they reportedly arrived late to put out a fire in a slum.
Around 300 to 350 hutments of the Khalpar area were gutted by the time the 27 fire engines finally arrived.
The delay caused maximum damage to property, and one person was reportedly injured in the fire that spread like wildfire. However no casualty was reported.
When reports last came in, the engines were still trying out to put the fire that spread to the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.
West Bengal Fire Minister Pratim Chatterjee was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, “the exact cause of the fire has not been ascertained as yet, but we suspect that the fire must have spread from a coke oven or from burning of dry twigs and wood for cooking.”
The area has abundance of combustible substances therefore it did not take too long for the fire to spread.
Meanwhile, the police have cordoned off the area.
