Kolkata: Kolkata received around 110 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, and over 410 mm over the last three days.
The Metrological Office says the city might witness a complete washout in the next 24 hours.
"Under its influence, very to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places (is) likely to occur over the districts of Gangetic West Bengal, (and) adjacent districts of Jharkhand and Orissa,” says Director, Regional Met Centre, G C Debnath.
But what lies ahead is perhaps worse than what we have seen so far. Kolkata is bracing for a flood.
Says Mayor, Kolkata, Bikash Bhattacharyya, “We have been making all efforts to ensure that the pumps do function in time and also trying to coordinate with the irrigation department so that the outflow canals are kept in a proper navigable condition so that the waters may flow out."
Flooding cost the municipal authorities a great deal of credibility and after three days of embarrassment, the Mayor and Bengal's Finance Minister embarked on a unique PR exercise.
They visited waterlogged areas of the city to assure people that the government would do its best to help them, while the Chief Minister metrological and civic authorities to prepare for the impending deluge.
With the weatherman providing absolutely no assurances of relief from rains in the next 48 hours, the state government and Kolkata's civic body must prepare themselves for some serious crisis management exercise.
However, it remains to be seen whether those efforts cut ice with some very angry citizens who are in distress.
