Univ students protest, lock up V-C in Kolkata

Kolkata: Students of Jadavpur University in Kolkata on Thursday gheraoed the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar while protesting against the university authorities' decision to install Close Circuit Television Cameras cameras on campus. They were also protesting against rules like restrictions of students' movements on campus, as well as mandatory carrying of I-cards.

The decision to install CCTVs was prompted by the recovery of a body of an unknown man in a pond inside the campus last Tuesday. The organised relay sit-in demonstrations.

In the face of the agitation, Vice-Chancellor Pradip Narayan Ghosh has stuck to his ground, saying that the CCTVs will be installed and the students could give suggestions only on where to install them.

"There will be no discussion until these agitations are lifted," Ghosh said.

The agitating students, on the other hand, said they were against installation of CCTVs anywhere in the campus because that would be gross invasion of privacy and civil rights.

The deadlock over the issue persists with both the authorities and the students adamant on their respective stands.
