Rizwan case: Kolkata top cop defends police, pays price

CNN-IBN

"The way Calcutta Police have acted it will continue to act like this in future. Thank you.”

Kolkata: This is the defence that has Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee in trouble. Mukherjee's statements, made a day after Rizwan-ur-Rehman's body was found on a railway track, have annoyed CPI-M's top brass.

Sources say Mukherjee will be transferred soon after the Durga Puja festival.

Though he is a close confidant of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, with public and party pressure mounting, Buddhadeb has little choice but to take action against the top cop.

Even CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu had openly criticised the commissioner for his comments. “I condemn the comments of police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee in the case where he defended the police force and said we are professionals and we work this way,” he said.

The state government has already come down heavily on the state police and suspended two officials. But Rizwan’s family says not enough has been done.

“Mere removal from his office will not be satisfactory because if he’s part of the crime, he has to be punished,” says Rizwan’s brother Rukbanur Rehman.

As for Buddhadeb, this incident, like Nandigram and Singur, is another instance where he has been late in gauging the public mood.
