Kolkata traffic cops 'beat' the heat

Kolkata: Battling the heat is a shade easier this summer for traffic sergeant Prodipto Majumder.

The UV-resistant sunglasses that he sports were provided by Kolkata Police, which has taken a slew of measures to make life easier for the two and a half thousand policemen on the traffic beat.

Fans have been installed at all roadside outposts, and packets of ORS - which is a water-based drink containing salt and sugar - are being supplied at regular intervals.

"It's impossible to solve all our problems. But some have certainly been addressed,” says Sergeant, Kolkata Traffic Police Prodipto Majumder.

But the pick of the initiatives taken by the department is this oxygen concentrator, which has been installed at ten key traffic outposts.

It supplies pure oxygen to fatigued policemen, and a few drags bring back a great deal of energy.

It's a tiresome job, especially in this heat, but somebody's got to do it. And to say that these gadgets have provided some relief to these policemen is an understatement.

Superior officers say this is just the beginning and more such ideas are in store.
