Kolkata: An average person in Kolkata may easily spends two hours on the road everyday, dealing with narrow lanes, traffic and pollution. But all that is going to hopefully change soon. Kolkata traffic police website will soon stream live images of the traffic on roads. But the hitch is that only the richest in the city can take full advantage of traffic management 2.0
"With the help of new age technology we can now send live pictures of and details of traffic congestion across the city so that the commuters can avoid those routes," says Vineet Goyal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
The plans are certainly ambitious. They involve allowing you to complain on Facebook and issuing traffic policemen electronic devices to take fines. Cameras on streets will also ensure errant drivers don't get away with violations.
"We are in the process and very soon our sergeants will have BlackBerry or Android-enabled phones with swipe cards so that people can pay up their fines." says Goyal.
Those who have a BlackBerry or an Internet-enabled phone can get live updates of traffic in the city which tells exactly which rotes to avoid and for those who don't have such devices will need to do what they usually do - honking on the roads.
