Kolkata: The 12-hour bandh in Kolkata was possibly the first completely successful bandh organised by the Trinamool Congress.
While the city came to a standstill, agitated Trinamool Congress supporters resorted to violence in other parts of West Bengal.
The supporters torched a bus in Sealdah and a CPI (M) party office in Howrah. Pitched battles between Trinamool Congress and CPI (M) supporters were also reported.
By and large people preferred to stay indoors on Friday and enjoy a prolonged weekend in response to the TMC-Congress-SUCI 12-hour general strike.
However, unlike other bandhs, this time people were reluctant to venture outdoors fearing violence.
"I didn't want to take a risk,” said a resident.
"I think this bandh is justified. It's a successful bandh that has the support of the people,” added another resident.
The streets were deserted and the shutters were down in Kolkata. People were jostling to get a foothold on the few buses that were plying on a day when all other forms of public transport were off the roads.
The scene was no different at Writers' Buildings, the state secretariat. With hardly any activity taking place, Writers' Buildings replicated the mood of the rest of the city.
The IT sector too bore the brunt of the bandh. Most of the offices witnessed an average of 60 per cent attendance despite private transportation provided to employees.
