Koodankulam plant is safe: Chidambaram

HYDERABAD: R Chidambaram, chief scientific advisor to the central government, said on Friday that the Kudankulam nuclear plant is being built with very advanced safety technology and therefore there need not be any fear of radiation.

Delivering the Yarlagadda Sreeramulu Eighth Endowment Lecture on "India's Technology NEEDS: Nuclear to Rural" at Institute of Engineers here, he said that the VVER reactors used in Koodankulam and supplied by Russia have been used in various countries and have proved to be safe. As many as 16 such reactors were in operation in Russia, and nine outside including two in China which started operation recently.

One has to ensure safety in designing, operation and regulation of nuclear plants, which has been followed well at Kudankulam, he added.
