PUDUCHERRY: Union Minister of State for PMO V Narayanasamy said that the Koodankulam Plant would become operational soon. Speaking to reporters after distributing assistance to the flood-affected, on Tuesday,  he said about 99 per cent of work on the plant had been completed and it would meet the power requirements of TN, which was facing  a shortage.

He said despite experts having vouched for the safety measures at the plant, people like S P Udayakumar, convener of PMANE, were spreading false information about the safety measures of the nuclear plant.

He said the fears about the safety had been unfounded and the efforts to make the plant operational would not be scuttled. Narayanasamy said the TN government has registered 156 cases against the agitators opposing the commissioning of the plant. He, however, added that no arrests had been made so far and reiterated his allegation that the agitators were getting funds in the name of NGOs from abroad.

The Union Minister said the country needs nearly 2.5 lakh mega-watt of electricity, but only 1.5 lakh mega-watt was now produced.

He said the country would target to produce 40,000 mega-watt from nuclear plants by 2020.
