Hassan: A shocking case of corporal punishment has been reported from Hassan, Karnataka where a 10-year-old girl of a government school was beaten up by her class teacher for not doing her homework. In the past four months, the once cheerful little fourth standard student has changed completely. She doesn't talk anymore, except to recall her name, barely recognises her own family and has not been eating well.
Pushpa Devraj's worried parents were shocked to discover that she was suffering from severe head trauma after a school teacher allegedly beat her. Pushpa's father MK Devaraj said, "He beat my daughter mercilessly and then threw her on the ground. My child was already weak and now she doesn't even have the strength to lift a coffee cup."
Her friends say the teacher punished the child for not doing her homework. Pushpa's father, who is the head of the school development and monitoring committee, alleged that he and the teacher had been at loggerheads in the past and the teacher had taken revenge by punishing the child.
The teacher initially denied beating her but later admitted it after several students revealed the truth. He has now been suspended as corporal punishment continues to shame our education system.
