K'taka CM asks IT cos to move out

Roshni Menon, CNN-IBN

Bangalore: The Karnataka government has told Bangalore's Information Technology companies to look beyond the Garden City, at smaller towns for expansion.

Kumaraswamy has gone back on his promise. When he assumed office, three months ago, he assured the IT sector of co-operation in expansion in Bangalore.

But now he has told IT companies they must look towards smaller cities to expand.

"Those working in the small-scale industries, even government industries get only Rs 880 to Rs 1,700. They are facing a lot of problems because of the IT industry. We are requesting them to go for tier II cities," said Kumaraswamy.

Larger IT companies are already expanding in other parts of Karnataka, but the Chief Minister's stand might hurt smaller companies and the BPO sector.

Kumaraswamy's predecessor also had to deal with the dilemma of asking the IT industry to expand out of Bangalore.

While the Chief Minister's promise to provide more facilities seemed too good to be true, the IT industry had already decided to pack its bags and move. And perhaps that's why many are not surprised at this political turnaround.
