K'taka Eng schools get ultimatum
Bangalore: Kannada is now the only medium of instruction in all primary schools that follow the state syllabus in Karnataka.
The state has now decided to go ahead with this decision after a series of meetings between school managements and Kannada activists.
The state government has decided to go ahead with its crackdown on over 2,000 schools in Karnataka, which violated the 1994 language policy.
The policy makes it compulsory to teach in Kannada till class five in all government recognised schools.
“Total 2,73, 840 students affected. We'll take care of the students, locate them in aided and government schools nearby before October 10. Arrangements will be made, whatever parents prefer, we'll accommodate them,” Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Basavaraj Horatti said.
Meanwhile, Saturday morning saw tense heads of various private schools hoping that the government would change its mind.
"We've appealed to the minister and the Chief Minister to reconsider this in the interest of parents and students," President, Karnataka Unaided Schools' Managements' Association, G S Sharma said.
But, the request to continue with English till the end of the academic year went in vain.
It was pressure from the Kannada lobbies, led by activists like Vatal Nagaraj and writers like Chidananda Murthy, which was victorious at the end of the day.
Twenty days from now, over two lakh students will have to learn Science as vignana and Math as ganitha.
And who knows, two years from then on, they may change their schools and re-learn their language of learning all over again.
