K'taka governor at loggerheads with govt

Bangalore: The battlelines are drawn between the Karnataka Governor and the state government over attacks on churches in the state.

Karnataka governor HR Bhardwaj criticised the state government in his Republic Day speech over the church attacks in the state.

Bhardwaj had said, “It has been reported to me that in a single day that's, January 25, fresh attacks have been made in churches in Bhatkal, Mysore and in Uttara Kannada districts.

Ever since the former Union law minister was shifted to Karnataka, there has been an uneasy relationship between the Raj Bhawan and Vidhan Soudha. Whether be it the church attacks or the flood relief, the governor has always had a different opinion to the way the state government should have handled the situation.

The BJP claims that the opposition Congress is using the Raj Bhawan to harrass the state government.

BJP Leader Venkaiah Naidu said, “The governor office should not be allowed to be used for political purposes and Congress wants to use the governor's office to fight the BJP government. Congress leaders should remember that the governor is a constitution authority to safeguard the constitution and that he is not an AICC authority.”

The recent confrontation comes after the Bhardwaj rejected the nomination of former minister V Somanna to the Legislative Council stating that only those who have rendered services to society should be nominated to the Council.

The governor also rejected the state's nomination to the vice chancellor post of the Mangalore university. BJP alleges that Bhardwaj is behaving like opposition party.

Meanwhile, Congress Leader Krishna Byregowda said, “They're just trying to politicise the issue, its nothing but the BJP being sore that they were told they did the wrong thing, it would be in the best interest of the state if the BJP respects the constitution.”

It seems Legal eagle H R Bhardwaj doesn't want to sit back and enjoy the cooler climes of Bangalore at the ripe age. Governorship is not really a retirement post for him. He wants to be an active first citizen of the state. But, the state government strongly feels that he is exceeding the brief. It is also true that constant fight between Governor and the government is giving free entertainment to the people.
