Bangalore: Teaching his daughter Kannada after work is one of B Dhananjay’s favourite pastimes, but come June 1 and the roles might just reverse.
The government has decided to teach English as a subject from first standard in all its Kannada medium schools and aided institutions.
Dhannanjay’s six-year-old Jeevitha who joins the first standard this year is all set to learn English and Dhananjay is happy.
"The introduction of English as a subject has not only made us all happy, but it will also help my child's future,” says Dhananjay.
The curriculum prepared by an expert group is all about story-telling, songs and rhymes that will be taught over five periods a week.
Says Director of the Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT), Satyanarayana Reddy, “Around 1.12 teachers have been trained and the textbooks are ready. The first phase will not have exams.”
And the government's logic behind the move is as Primary Education Minster, Basavaraj Horatti says, “"We have been getting demands to introduce the subject because of the IT boom. We also got demands from parents from groups of backwards castes as well as SC ST groups.”
It is a move that has brought more than 35 lakh children closer to a whole lot of opportunities in an increasingly global world. And it is also a move, which has left them happy and excited.
