Bangalore: The Karnataka government is looking to enhance the IT skills of its graduates.
It is tying up with the private sector and launching finishing schools. They will offer post-graduate courses in communication skills, problem solving and voice training and etiquette.
Says Secretary, Dept of IT, Karnataka, M N Vidyashankar "MeritTrac, a consultancy firm in Bangalore, came out with a report on employability of engineering graduates in Karnataka. That really opened our eyes to the numbers of our graduates who could find employment on the basis of their academic degree alone.”
The government has already tied up with Mysore University to start a course. The course will enroll 5,000 students in 2007, and by 2009, the number will rise to 30,000 students.
The government is also talking with Bangalore University for a course to churn out similar numbers for the banking sector.
Sources say Carnegie Mellon University is interested in setting up a school at Ramanagaram near Bangalore.
The IT and ITeS sector will continue to hire about one lakh people a year, according to some projections
The government initiative has received tremendous response, particularly from the banking and finance sectors.
Companies including HSBC, Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan have in principle agreed to take in people certified by these schools.
