Lady Army officer on trial, a first

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The first ever trial of a lady Army officer has begun near Chandigarh.

The officer - Major Dimple Singla - allegedly demanded and accepted bribe from an Army personnel facing court martial so as to influence the trial in their favour.

She has also been accused of illegal gains and acts damaging to the order and the discipline of the military.

Major Singla - who belongs to the Judge Advocate General branch of the Army, the branch which handles legal issues of the armed forces - allegedly tried to influence the selection of the defence counsel.

She will be tried by the General Court Martial on alleged graft charges.

Meanwhile, Major Singla's lawyer, Colonel S K Aggarwal, has alleged that the trial is not being conducted fairly.

"They have not supplied us with the court of inquiry report despite repeated requests. The court of inquiry is an one-sided affair and we were not allowed to even ask questions that were inconvenient to the other side," he said.

Major Singla is the second lady defence officer, after Bangalore-based Indian Air Force Flying Officer Anjali Gupta, to face court martial ever since women officers had started joining the Army in 1983.

In May last year, Anjali Gupta was court martialled after being charged under the Air Force Act. She had accused three senior officials of sexual harassment.
