New Delhi: The Pakistani security establishment claims that there are similarities between the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan and the Mumbai terror strikes.
Television footage of terrorists opening fire around 0830 hrs (Pakistan time) on the Sri Lankan cricket team bus going towards the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore stunned all.
About 10 to 12 terrorists ran through the streets of up-market Gulberg with machine guns in hand, rucksacks on their backs.
The scenes were reminiscent of the 10-member Lashkar-e-Toiba terror attack in Mumbai in November last.
It was a planned commando-style attack as in Mumbai. The terrorists were seen operating in 'buddy pairs' as in the Mumbai attacks.
The terrorists attacked with heavy weapons and carried ammunition, grenades as well as weapons in back packs as in Mumbai.
Habibur Rehman, the police chief of Lahore, claims there were 10 to 12 terrorists and they appeared well trained like the terrorists who attacked Mumbai.
This comparison and underlining the similarity is something that was reiterated by Salman Taseer, the Governor of Punjab.
“This was a planned terrorist attack. They had heavy weapons. These were the same methods and the same sort of people as hit Mumbai,” said Taseer.
Unlike Mumbai, however, the terrorists continue to remain at large. Indian foreign minister, Pranab Mukherjee warned that unless the terror infrastructure in Pakistan is dismantled there will be more such terror attacks.
