Lalgarh: Even as security forces battle Maoists in Lalgarh many villagers of the area have been caught in the crossfire. They have been forced to take refuge in the relief camps set up in the area.
Varsha Panda, just 25-day-old is the youngest refugee at a makeshift camp in Lalgarh. The camp was set up by the Trinamool Congress just a few days ago at the Pirakata High School.
Varsha's mother Rinku fled here with her baby in her arms as the battle raged against Maoists
"What can I do? We had to come out of our houses and leave the village when we heard the gunshots," said Rinku Panda.
She has temporary refuge in the spartan conditions of the camp but Varsha and other refugees face an uncertain future.
The rural population is suffering due to the gunbattle between the Maoists and the police.
Politics over the displaced people has already started. The camp at Pirakata High School has been set up by the Trinamool Congress but now the local SDO has ordered to vacate the school as a camp for the security personnel will be set up there.
The camp has been set up by a political party. We need that place to make arrangements for the stay of the security personnel," said Parthav GHosh, SDO, West Jhargram sub division.
However, those running the camp are defiant.
"The local SDO has asked me vacate. I am not going to let that happen. Where will these people go otherwise?" asked Dhananjay Rai, in-charge of the camp.
Trinamool workers have also made it clear that they would oppose any move to evict the refugees
Over 10,000 people have escaped from their villages looking for food and shelter.
But the three camps built by the administration can only accommodate 6,000. In Lalgarh, now there is another battle on.
A daily battle for survival by thousands of displaced villagers.
