Jaipur: One of cricket’s most powerful men Lalit Modi lost the elections for president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association.
Modi claimed he was a victim of power politics - and the tussle between the newly elected Congress government in the state and the BJP government it replaced.
Finally, it took a government nominee to checkmate Indian cricket's finance wizard. Sanjay Dixit, incumbent for the post of Rajasthan Cricket Association president, defeated Lalit Modi to perhaps deliver a huge blow to the brains behind the IPL.
Tangled in a host of litigations, it will be interesting to see how the IPL commissioner finds his feet.
Modi does realize that it is always difficult when your home becomes enemy territory.
"Of course we are disappointed with the results. A lot of hard work has gone in and that is why we are disappointed with it. But at the end of the day, it is a verdict of the voters," said Modi after defeat.
IPL's creator will now have to create a new domain for himself, after being dethroned from the Rajasthan Cricket Association,
Bureaucrat Sanjay Dixit’s win has ended Modi's reign as President of the RCA, defeating him by 18 votes to 13.
"We have ended the atrocities and injustice perpetrated by Lalit Modi. This is an historic moment, and you are witnessing history,” said Dixit, post victory.
Modi had known it would be a bitter fight ever since numerous contentious charges cropped up against him in Rajasthan of late.
While Dixit is overjoyed to have beaten Indian cricket's financial wizard in the polls, the Modi camp believes it was the latter’s proximity to former Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje that did him in.
"It's a part of life and we have to live with it and continue with it," Modi said, taking the lows with the highs.
While it’s difficult to certify whether this has been a calculated witch-hunt, Modi's other portfolio looks safe for the time being.
Modi puts on a graceful and brave front.
"At the end of the day we hope the good work continues. We have to carry on and I still have to do a lot of work at the BCCI and the IPL and we will do that," said the man even in defeat.
The defeat will not affect his position in the BCCI since he's also on the board of the Punjab Cricket Association, nor will it cause any trouble for his IPL connections.
