Lalu the MP loses to Lalu the Rail Minister

Chhapra: Work is on in full swing on the railway line which will link Railway Minister Lalu Prasad's ancestral village to that of his wife Rabri Devi.

While the residents of Gopalganj district are delighted, the mood is not quite the same in neighbouring Chhapra, Lalu's Parliamentary constituency.

“The rail line connects Phulwaria Sadar station to Rabridevi's village. Lalu is running this train to connect to his in-laws village,” said Aslam Ansari, Resident, Chhapra.

Ironically, Chhapra has always been Lalu's political strength, electing him to the state assembly and Parliament every time. But when he took charge of the Indian Railways, it was Gopalganj that received the largesse.

The new station coming up is at Selar village, the native village of Rabri Devi. “He hasn't done anything here. The public votes for him, but he develops his in-laws village,” says Chhapra resident, Arun Kumar.

But Lalu is no stranger to such controversy. Earlier too, he was accused of gifting his village, Phulwaria, with helipads, hospitals, police stations and smooth roads when he was the CM, and now the new rail line, which is in violation of railway norms.

“This area has developed. There is a station and a police station,” says Phulwaria resident, Bhola Singh,.

So, while his village continues to prosper, those who voted him to Parliament have to be content with a rail wheel factory announced with fanfare but far from complete.

So, while Lalu the Railway Minister is a sure winner, Lalu the MP still has to win many hearts.
