Land prices soar in Nano's new home

New Delhi: Land prices have soared at Sanand after Tata Motors decided to set up the Nano plant there.

The rise in land prices, in some cases by as much as 10 times, has come as a boon for farmers in the villages around Sanand.

"I have 16 bighas of land. The price per bigha was around Rs 3 lakh and now its Rs 30 lakh. But I will still hold on," Mir Khan, a farmer in Chharodi village in Sanand where the Nano plant would be set up, said.

Real estate agents like Jagsingh Bharwad say business is flourishing.

"About 300 land deals have already been completed in the past week or so," Bharwad said.

The situation is quite the opposite in Singur in West Bengal, the previous home of the Nano. Land prices in Singur have nosedived especially in the areas next to the Durgapur Expressway.

Monocrop land prices which were up to Rs 48 lakh per acre have now fallen to Rs 1.2 lakh and multicrop land prices from Rs 75 lakh to just Rs 1.5 lakh per acre.

A year ago Ganesh Bag was being offered Rs 24 lakh for his eight-cottah plot next to the project. When Tatas withdrew, so did his real estate agent.

And for those who believe that Bengal's biggest loss on account of Nano is only its image, the farmers could offer a different perspective.
