Eight fishermen from a village near Vedaranyam were injured in an attack by the Sri Lankan Navy when they were fishing in the sea off Thopputhurai coast on Sunday early morning. They were later admitted to the Government Hospital here.
According to the fishermen, they ventured out to sea in five boats early on Sunday morning for deep-sea fishing from Vellapallam. When they were fishing about 20 knots off the Thopputhurai coast, Lankan Navy personnel arrived in a fast craft and ordered the Indian fishermen to return.
Following this, they jumped into the boats and attacked the eight fishermen and damaged their fishing nets.
The fishermen returned to shore in the afternoon. The injured were admitted to the Nagapattinam government hospital.
Fisheries Minister KA Jayapal, District Collector T Munusamy, Joint Director of Fisheries Subburaj, Assistant Director Chandran, Tahsildar Sampathkumar and other officials met the injured - Kuppusamy, Mahalingam, Anbuselvan, Apparaj, Murugaiyyan, Ponnusamy, Sathiyamoorthy and Ilaiyaraja at the government hospital here on Sunday.
The Minister directed the fisheries department officials to conduct an enquiry and submit a report to the government.
