Bhubaneswar: Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday suspended five policemen for allegedly failing to protect a nun who was raped in Kandhamal district during Hindu-Christian clashes in August.
"Five policemen have been placed under suspension for misconduct and negligence of duty in connection with the nun episode," said Home Secretary T K Mishra.
The nun, at a press conference last week, recounted the attack on her in K Nuagaon village on August 25, the day the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had called for a state-wide shutdown.
“I went to policemen, asking them to protect me. I sat in between three policemen, but they did not move. Police did not take down my statement—I was raped,” she said.
Patnaik has said the rape was a disgrace and promised action against the policemen.
Sub-Inspector, Rasananda Mallick, Havildar Major K N Mohapatra and havildars S K Hamim, J S Khan and B K Mohanty were suspended for alleged dereliction of duty. They allegedly didn’t prevent a mob of rioters from attacking the nun.
The policemen were suspended on the basis of a joint report prepared by Kandhamal Collector and Superintendent of Police. With the action taken against the five, a total of six policemen having been suspended so far in connection with the incident.
Baliguda police station officer in-charge was suspended for allegedly failing to take steps after the nun lodged an FIR on August 26.
