Latest news in health

New Delhi: Here is a look at the latest health news.

Bypassing use of embryonic stem cells

Scientists may have found a way to bypass use of the controversial embryonic stem cells. Latest research carried out on mice suggests it may be now possible to replicate embryonic stem cells from skin patches, rather than having to use embryos, according to the Journal Nature.

Scientists from America and Japan used a cell called the fibroblast and switched it back to an embryonic stage. These were then developed into a variety of different tissue types.

Genetics behind several serious diseases

A Wellcome Trust study has claimed to reveal the genetics behind several serious diseases. The study reported in the Journal Nature, analysed the DNA of 17,000 people and found new genetic variants for depression, Crohn's disease, coronary heart disease, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 and 2 diabetes.

It is hoped that this will pave the way for research into new treatments and genetic tests for these diseases.
