Abbas Kazmi - a private lawyer, not belonging to the legal aid panel - has been appointed to defend the terror accused. Kazmi is a well known name in the legal circle and has already been introduced to the accused.
Kazmi was permitted to meet his new client at the Arthur Road Central Jail premises after the days' proceedings were completed in the Special Court set up there.
CNN-IBN quizzed the eminent lawyer about the new case involving the trial of the captured terrorist.
Abbas Kazmi said Kasab does not understand the gravity of the Mumbai terror attacks case or the charges against him.
CNN-IBN: Advocate Kazmi, you are a known name in legal circles. Sir, what were your thoughts when you took this case?
ABBAS KAZMI: As I said, you know, when I was watching through the media that advocates were reluctant and hesitant to take up this case, and to the few advocates that were appointed, were meted aout very bad treatment. So I thought that it is my legal and professional duty that in case I have to defend a person like him, and if the court requires it, then I should not hesitate.
CNN-IBN: What is your understanding of Kasab as a person?
Abbas Kazmi: See, what I see is that he is at a very tender age and he does not understand the seriousness of allegations which he faces. So he is totally naive about it.
CNN-IBN: What was the conversation with Kasab like?
Abbas Kazmi: I just explained to him that "I had been appointed as your advocate. You are facing very serious allegations. " The government of India and the judiciary department is making the strongest endeavour to give him a fair trial.
CNN-IBN: Do you believe that this is going to be an easy trial? For many, this is an open and shut case.
Abbas Kazmi: As I said, I have just been given the brief. I have not yet read the FIR. So let me go through the documents and the chargesheet. Then I will be in a position to define my strategy.
