Lawyer says may take up Kasab case, faces ire

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Noted criminal lawyer Ashok Sarogi is facing the ire for indicating he was willing to take up the case of Mohammad Ajmal Kasab – the lone terrorist captured after the November 26 attack in Mumbai.

Nearly 200 activists of Bal Thackeray-led Shiv Sena held demonstrations outside Sarogi's home in Malad, Mumbai and pelted stones.

They also forced the lawyer into giving a written statement that he will not represent Kasab. The Mumbai police have now offered protection to Sarogi, who later clarified his stand.

“There was some confusion. I had given a statement that if the legal procedure can't be completed without a lawyer, any lawyer, including I can fulfill it so that he can be punished,” he said.

Sarogi had represented Abu Salem earlier.

Former Additional advocate General P Janardhan has also said he's willing to represent Kasab, if the Pakistan embassy approaches him.

Janardhan's offer comes even as the Esplanade court bar association has passed a resolution that none of them will defend Kasab.
