CHENNAI: Tension prevailed at Ambattur police station on Friday night after a fight broke out between lawyers and policemen. While the policemen sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital, a case was registered against seven persons including two lawyers. They were arrested and later released on bail.
Police sources said it all started at the Ambattur AWPS when Alagumalai (28), an employee in a pharmacy lodged a complaint that his wife Latha (22) was missing since Thursday.
Police said upon an initial inquiry they found that the girl was taken away by her father Subramany to his house in Pallavaram. Police sources said that Latha and Alagumalai fell in love and registered their marriage three months ago. They were living at Ambattur. The woman’s father later came along with a lawyer Pandian to the AWPS where Subramany alleged that his daughter was never married to Alagumalai. Police said that an argument followed between Alagamalai and the lawyer. Later, the lawyer went and lodged a complaint against Alagumalai at the Ambattur L&O police station alleging that he had spoken to him in abusive language.
Later, when Inspector George Miller Ponraj said he would question Alagumalai before taking any action, the lawyer had insisted that he arrest the man immediately, police said. Soon, it led to an argument and police claimed that the lawyer Pandian, who had come along with six others, attacked the police inspector and a fight ensued. Police said four personnel got injured and were admitted to a Hospital. A case was registered against Pandian and six others, who were arrested and later released on bail. Meanwhile, another case was registered against five persons including Latha’s father, police said.
