Lawyers pretend to be revellers to dodge cops

Islamabad: With the police cracking down on lawyers participating in a countrywide protest in Pakistan, some members of the legal fraternity disguised themselves as a wedding party to dodge law enforcers and reach the venue of a demonstration.

Around 150 lawyers reached the Rawalpindi district court by pretending to be part of a baraat (wedding procession). The group from Phalia sub-district in Punjab province fooled police with getting two lawyers to pose as the bride and groom.

While Amir Shahzad Gondal was the 'groom', Yasmeen Tahir was his 'bride' and the rest of the lawyers were baaratis (part of the wedding party). Some even carried dholkis and bajas (musical instruments) to trick the police.

On reaching the court building on Saturday, the 'bridegroom' got out of his car and threw off his sehra (ceremonial headgear) while the 'bride' exchanged her bridal gown for casual clothes.

The lawyers shouted 'Chief Zindabad' and other slogans in support of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who was deposed by former President Pervez Musharraf for not endorsing the 2007 emergency.
