Chennai: A magistrate of the Egmore Sessions Court in Chennai has filed a complaint alleging that 20 advocates beat him up inside his chamber after he denied bail to a client of one of the lawyers.
"A lawyer used the most foul language in open court against the magistrate, who then walked into his chambers and closed the doors. The lawyer then brought 20 other advocates with him and beat the magistrate and court officials who tried to stop them from entering the chamber," said Balakrishnan, and officer of the court.
The lawyers' association however denies there was any violence. “Our preliminary investigations show that even the magistrate insulted the lawyer. Both sides are at fault so both should be punished,” said Kanagaraj, president of the lawyers association.
The lawyers want to settle the issue without the police. The Madras High Court Chief Justice is holding talks with other judges as well as lawyers' associations.
