Mumbai: A municipal corporator in Mumbai wants the civic body to play an audio tape of the National Anthem Jana Gana Mana at important meetings.

The reason that Mangesh Bansode gives is – "Some sing it loudly, some softly. There's no rhythm, no synchronisation in voice.”

But Bansode’s proposal of a taped version of the National Anthem to be played out at the corporation house meetings, has offended another Mumbaikar.

Diwakar Dwivedi, a lawyer has filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court arguing that corporators who do not sing the National Anthem correctly must be disqualified.

“It is shameful that the corporators don’t know how to sing the National Anthem,” says Dwivedi.

But interestingly, other municipal corporators find the controversy unwanted and would rather stick to the BMC tradition of singing the anthem.

"It must be felt from within. There's no need for tape,” says Standing Committee Chairman, Ravindra Waikar.

To sing or sing along with an audiotape? Seems like this tussle over the National anthem seems far from over.
