CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Within hours of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, leaders around the world strongly condemned the attack.

Here’s what they had to say on the attack on Pakistan’s opposition leader and former prime minister:

President, USA, George W Bush

“Mrs Bhutto served the nation twice as PM and she knew that her return to Pakistan would put her life at risk. Yet she refused to allow assassins to dictate the course of her country. We stand with the people of Pakistan in their struggle against the forces of terror and extremism. We urge them to honour Benazir Bhutto's memory by continuing with the democratic process for which she so bravely gave her life.”

President, Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai

“We in Afghanistan condemn this act of cowardice and immense brutality in the strongest possible terms.”

Prime Minister, United Kingdom, Gordon Brown

”The message that must go out after the death of such great bravery is that terror should never be allowed in the wake of killing democracy. This atrocity makes us more determined than before that terrorist will not win here, there or anywhere else in the world.”

European Commission President's Spokesman, Joe Hennon

”The commission condemns this terrorist attack. This just came few days before elections. This is an attack on Pakistan's democracy and Pakistan itself.”

Secretary General, UN, Ban Ki Moon

“I call upon the government to bring the perpetrators to the trustees and condemn in the strongest possible term this assassination of Benazir Bhutto.”
