Mike Myers plays The Love Guru

New Delhi: After Austin Powers, Mike Myers returns as the The Love Guru in the film of the same name that also stars Justin Timberlake and Jessica Alba.

Myers has co-written and produced this comedy that lampoons Deepak Chopra-style gurus. Myers plays Guru Pitika, an American raised by gurus, who returns to US in order to break into the self-help business.

As his first challenge he has to settle the romantic troubles of a star hockey player whose wife left him for a rival athlete.

"In 1994 I did a stage show, and I did five characters, and two of the five characters, one was Austin Powers and one was the Guru Pitka," says Myers.

"Austin Powers was my father's comedy, and the The Love Guru, Guru Pitka, was me dealing with my father's death, just trying to make sense of it, you know?" he adds.

And though The Love Guru has attracted protests from some organisations over its portrayal of Hindu gurus, the film's actor Manu Narayan, who plays Myers' assistant, denies that the movie is offensive.

"I'm laughing my butt off, it's pretty amazing. Mike Meyers is brilliant. To be able to work with him and act with him! When I first read the script, what I was touched by was it doesn't speak in my opinion to any religion," says Narayan.

Directed by Marco Schnabel, The Love Guru is slated to hit the UK theatres on August 1.
