The CPM polit buro met to discuss the election results. Though party general secretary Prakash Karat is under fire, Left leaders insisted he won't quit.
Their bastion breached and stunned by the virtual rout in the polls, the CPM's politburo was an introspection trip. This also happened amidst reports that the West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had offered to resign.
CPM leader Biman Bose refuted all charges that Buddhadeb’s papers were in.
“I tell you, all this is only gossip. There is no iota of doubt that this is not what is happening,” he said.
For a party in which murmurs of dissent are rarely heard, the defeat has prompted strong criticism of the central leadership, say sources.
The West Bengal unit strongly put forth its arguments that the withdrawal of the support to the UPA could have hurt the party more than it imagined.
Projection of the Third Front also gave a perception of instability, thereby only helping the Congress.
The Kerala units admitted that bitter infighting proved to be expensive.
The state committees will give their reports to the politburo which will be debated at next month's Central Committee meeting.
Sources say some members could push for fixing of responsibility for the defeat.
But publicly, the party maintains the line of collective responsibility.
CPM leader Nirupam Sen said, “All the decisions taken in the party are unanimous and accepted by the party members.”
While Karat could be facing the heat at the next month's central committee meeting, in West Bengal the chief minister is upset over the drubbing. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee met the party patriarch Jyoti Basu, thereby fuelling speculation of his possible resignation.
