Left will follow its allies' decision: Karat

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, in a virtual U-turn on his stand of not supporting the Congress post polls, has said that a final decision can only be taken after the counting day on May 16.

"Let the elections be over first. Let the results come. After May 16 we will think," karat has been quoted as saying by PTI.

Speaking to CNN-IBN's Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate, Karat said that Congress will have to deal with a combination of 10-11 parties including the Left post elections.

Karan Thapar: What worries many people is that as they hear Prakash Karat repeatedly saying that Congress is living in a fool's paradise, Congress mustn’t dream that they will not get our support that what he is doing is that by default he is accepting and supporting the prospects of an LK Advani prime ministership.

Prakash Karat: I don't think the BJP is going to be in the picture at all and the Congress party if they go on asking the Left for support... I am telling the Congress that you have to deal with this combination of 10-11 parties.

Karan Thapar: Quite right and the decision will be taken by the combination, not by the Left alone, right?

Prakash Karat: Yes

Karan Thapar: In which case seven parties who are three more than the four Left parties were to decide that they don’t want a second election and they don't want to see the NDA and the BJP come to power, then they may choose to support Congress, will you go with that majority or will you break the front?

Prakash Karat: Yes, we will go with whatever the combination decides and we are confident that this combination will remain steadfast in having a non-Congress government in Centre.
