New Delhi: Baby Manjhi can finally travel to Japan. She has finally been issued an identity certificate, which will allow her to travel.
Officials say this document is equilavalent to a passport, and the baby can now seek a visa from the Japanese embassy.
Two weeks ago the Supreme Court had stepped in and ordered the Centre to issue a passport for Manjhi within four weeks.
Manjhi, whose biological parents are from Japan, was born to an Indian surrogate mother two months ago. However, her biological parents got divorced before her birth and her father was unable to take her back home due to legal hurdles.
Manjhi has been in Jaipur since then. Now, her 74-yr-old grandmother Emiko Yamada can take her back to Japan.
Japanese law does not prohibit surrogacy but professional bodies of obstetricians and gynaecologists ban it, citing in part the possibility of custody battles.
