Legendary baul singer Gour Khyapa dies in road accident

New Delhi: Legendary baul singer Gaur Khyapa, who taught philosophy at Vassar and Brown universities and sang with the likes of Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and Janis Joplin, passed away in a road accident near Shantiniketan in West Bengal.

The baul artiste (65), who had suffered serious injuries in the car accident at Ilambazar near Shantiniketan on January 22, succumbed to his injuries at the state-run SSKM Hospital on Sunday, official sources said.

He is survived by his wife Parvati and daughter Lakshmi.

Gaur Khyapa, who sang with the likes of Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and Janis Joplin, passed away in a road accident.

Gour's philosophy and largely purist living drew a considerable Western audience and he travelled across the world teaching traditional baul music.

He lived at the Nichu Bandhgora locality in Bolpur, Shantiniketan and counted the legendary Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and Janis Joplin among people he met and influenced.

He was a contemporary of another baul exponent Purnadas Baul with whom he had performed in India and abroad. Gour was famous for his songs related to Radha Krishna.
